This is a highly readable self-realization story set in the school year when Little Rock's high schools were closed to avoid integration. The events of that time are a huge part of the storyline, yet it's also an interesting look at friend and family relationships. I liked how the ending was tied to the beginning, but for some reason was surprised that almost a whole year had passed when it was May - I didn't pick up on that time passing. Also, I felt like Marlee's math was a bit much at times, more like a device than a necessary part of the story. Still an interesting and worthwhile read.
