I'm a longtime fan of Bauer's, but this wasn't my favorite. I liked how Foster wasn't a good student, and books that center around baking cupcakes are just plain fun. Good cover, too. However, it felt too similar to her other works, and also had some interesting similarities to "Okay for Now" by Gary Schmidt. A few too many bad things kept happening - they just kept building up and felt too unlikely. And finally, I didn't care for how her thoughts would suddenly appear in italics, very randomly. Since it's in first person, the flow would have been better if all of her thoughts were presented in the same way within the text. It's still a decent suggestion for upper-elementary kids looking for realistic fiction.
